Pytanie #1:
Nanotechnology, the field of trying to build ultrasmall structures one atom at a time, has progressed in recent years. One potential application of nanotechnology is the construction of artificial cells. The simplest cells would probably mimic red blood cells, the body's oxygen transporters. For example, nanocontainers, perhaps constructed of carbon, could be pumped full of oxygen and injected into a person's bloodstream. If the person needed additional oxygen-due to a heart attack perhaps, or ror the purpose of space travel-these containers could slowly release oxygen into the blood, allowing tissues that would otherwise die to remain alive. Suppose that the nanocontainers were cubic and had an edge length of 25 nanometers.
(a) What's the volume of one nanocontainer? (Ignore the thickness of the nanocontainer's wall) (In liters)
(b) Suppose that each nanocontainers could contain pure oxygen pressurized to a density of 86 g/L. How many grams of oxygen could be contained by each nanocontainer?
(c)Normal air contains about 0.28 g of oxygen per liter. An average human inhales about 0.50 L of air per breath and takes about 20 breaths per minute. How many grams of oxygen does a human inhale per hour? (assume two significant figures)
(d) What's the minimum number of nanocontainers that a person would need in their bloodstream to provide 1 hour's worth of oxygen?
(e) What's the minimum volume occupied by the number of nanocontainers computed in part D?
(f) Is such a volume feasible, given that total blood volume in an adult is about 5 liters?

i am an electrical engineering major and i was wondering if it would help me if i got a minor in physics by taking two quantum mechanics courses and one modern physics course... see the thing is that i wanna go into nanotechnology and will be taking quite a few classes similar to those but would it really help me to take QM if i'm not a physics major?!? the main reason i ask is that i don't wanna take extra courses and stay in school longer just t ohave that particular knowledge you know? thank you in advance.
Pytanie #5:
My understanding is that nanotechnology, or at least fabrication, requires molecules/atoms in order to create stuff out of. Thus, nanobots couldn't create something out of nothing... could they? Unless you don't mind sacrificing oxygen and other gases. If you want to build a t-shirt, you need to sacrifice a t-shirt's worth of atoms to the machine? Unless I'm missing something key. O_o
No, just watching something on TV. They kept saying self-fabrication *essentially* allows you to create anything out of nothing.
At least, I suppose, landfills would become empty very quickly as people try to create things without buying stuff to swap. ;)
Pytanie #6:
If so, should I do anything about it? And if so, why and how?
I'm a 23 year old male. I have nearly finished my degree in Programming but I have been working with computers since 3rd grade. I don't have many amazing feats to claim. I took it upon myself when I was 16 to buy and sell candy bars through various fund raising sites in order to raise enough money to travel to Mexico for 2 weeks. The Fund raising process took me about a month and in total, I saw a profit of about $4,500.
My IQ rests at a mere 146, yet I find next to no one I meet to be able to hold a stimulating conversation. Hobbies of mine involve studying biotechnology (my original major), nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and other new technologies being released as well as how they tie into each other. I also enjoy theoretical physics. As far as I am concerned, the topics I enjoy only sound impressive, and have quite basic principles. A different type of "feat" I accomplished was dying for 20 minutes after being struck by a car, reviving myself by some means without medical aid followed by losing all the blood in my body and surviving. Due to this I lost my entire right leg, which I tossed aside as "sh!t happens" after 2 days. Mourning serves no purpose. I was released from the hospital after only a month, and learned to use my prosthetic effectively after a couple more months. I continue to defy laws of medical science.
I do recognize many as having far greater knowledge in certain topics in comparison to me. Medically, I know more than the average Joe, but less than anyone who's been trained in the field(or so I would hope and expect). When it comes to my field, I find certain people to have a greater knowledge than myself because they have gone deeper into the field and have had more experience, but that list is short.
My question bases on the fact that I feel like I'm surrounded by insignificant insects in my small town and all surrounding areas. They are nearly all weak-minded fools. I make one statement to them, and they reply with "my brain itches." This is after I've toned down my vocabulary a great deal seeing as when I was in 3rd grade, not a single person understood what I was saying. I got sick of having to explain every word I spoke. People that surround me feel the word 'emasculating' is a confusing word.
I am disgusted that no one seems to match my intellect except for one of my friends, who surpasses it. I am disgusted with the generations today seeming to have absolutely no spine or will to stand up for something. I am disgusted with how no one around me seems to feel any need to achieve anything. And last, but not least, I am disgusted with how no one seems to have any morals, standards, or code of honor anymore. People sleep with anyone as if it's some kind of contest. People cheat on others in relationships. People smile to a friend's face, then stab them in the back. Where has the decency gone? The Moral Fiber? Am I alone in the word in feeling this way? Am I just blindly feeling superior? I know I have my flaws, but at least I isolate them and take steps to remove them whenever I become aware of them.
Am I alone in the world* in feeling this way? - Typo, call it OCD, but I feel a need to correct the error this way since I am not allowed to edit the original post.
In response to the first answer: I appreciate the compliment, but I don't rate myself as being great. I've been referred to as modest. I view myself as standard, and question why others can't seem to meet even low expectations. In short, I despise weakness, and can't begin to fathom how anyone can be complacent being weak. I figure there must be something wrong with me, since it's improbable that the vast majority of the world has something wrong with them instead.
In response to Hugh Mcgillivray: You do not allow e-mail. I read your entire post, but I feel your word may be flawed. Have you ever taken an actual IQ test? It takes a few hours to complete a real IQ test and is not available online. Also, it is difficult to change your IQ more than even a couple points in your entire lifetime. You state that most of the little people have gone through worse than I have, yet no one I have ever met seems to have experienced what I have in life. I did not even cover my hardships in my post as they do not apply to the situation. I am often told to hang around with others more often because despite them having the worst life possible, my life sucks more and it helps them put things in perspective. I understand there are many people who have it worse than me, but I feel I am well-equipped to handle it. If you would like to discuss it further, you can E-mail me at Derek_Bade@yahoo.com.

Well, to be honest i should have worded that question better, but, anyways, I just want to know what kind of employment is available for it?
what the jobs are actually like?
is it a field that can also support involvement in areas such as nanotechnology, astrophysics, research and development (career progress, such as path to being a successful scientist)?
Pytanie #8:
I'm an electrical engineering student and since I have already done half of the physics classes required and enjoyed it, I'm going to get a minor in physics. I was wondering which would be more beneficial, Atomic/Quantum Physics or a concentration in Mechanics? I think the mechanics would make me more diverse and give me a degree of mechanical engineering knowledge. I believe the atomic/quantum physics would give me a better understanding of electricity and small scale electronics/nanotechnology. Which do you believe will be the most beneficial?
Pytanie #9:
Okay i really want to go into the field of nanotechnology, i know if you could modify the structure of atoms then you would have limitless potential. my question if two part and i want to see if my ideas coexist with ideas of others.
Medical nanobots are surgeons of unparalleled accuracy and millions of times more precise than any doctor could ever be, in one of the books i read its an idea to have nanobots living inside of you, would these bots be powered by the flow of your blood or what?
Assemblers as they're called will be able to make cars, building basically anything without costing much more than the materials needed or even costing nothing changing the atoms of compressed gasses to the materials that they want, would it be possible to power these robots with a radioactive fuel that is external and not attached to the nanobots, by using some form of only beta radiation?
noogie i would give u a thumbs up but i have 2 be level 2, and i don't know how to rate you as best answer :P, however i do have some questions, in the radioactivity solution wouldn't it be a good thing for the electrons to flow up and down because then you'd transfer electrons to the working part of the machine, and well, Radio waves are an electromagnetic wave, and are pretty poor at transferring energy efficiently? do you think that if i use beta radiation that it would destroy the nanobot? or maybe ionising a specially designed layer of the robot so that it can turn a motor or power some form of laser to take apart other atoms

Pytanie #12:
The space elevator has been a dream of science for quite a while, and what hinders its construction right now (apart from economical and political issues) is that there aren't materials that are both strong and light enough to support one. My question is, if we built a metal tower, and riddled it with balloons at regular intervals, which in turn would be heated with ground based lasers to provided maximum lift, wouldn't it be possible to make a near buoyant structure (it would of course be less buoyant the farther away from the surface it got, but the idea is that the lower structures support the higher ones), able to support a space elevator? The top could have some extra pull from a geostationary satellite as well.

Well first off I'll say that I'm 17 and I want to start doing a little research about career possibilities that I would find interesting. I am starting my Senior year of high-school.
Ill just list a few things that would help someone recommend me a career to research.
- I am a strong Math student.
- I am really good with computers/technology.
- I know I would like my career to be in the Science field.
- I am fascinated with Biology, Physics, and Robotics (not necessarily in that order.)
- I am very fascinated with the future and the plans that current scientists have for it.
- I really like reading about concepts for the future such as Nanotechnology, Human Enhancement, Time Travel (proven possible), and Space Exploration. I would very much like to be a part of this "movement."
- Lastly, I will be going into the Military right out of high-school so my schooling will be payed for and getting a good education will not be an issue.
I would really like any input such as career type names and college degrees required, so that I can start reading about my possibilities and have something to "work for."
I should probably add that I don't want to sit at a computer all day and that I'm really only considering careers in the Science field. The research type of Science. I want to be part of developing new technology.

Okay, this is an opinion question and I just wanted to know what you guys think. Will doctors play as big a role as today? I've been looking up some things that are supposed to be accomplished, such as the use of nanotechnology and robots in medicine by the year 2025. I'm 15 and I want to be a surgeon when I grow up but would I really be needed if these new technologies are "taking over"? Obviously doctors aren't going to cease to exist, but would they play a big role?

Pytanie #26:
I believe there is either going to be a positive or a negative.
Negative: Population explosion causes a population decrease due to starvation. Since there are more people and less resources at the time, when the population implodes, they are stuck with weaker technology. The government may be like the opposite of a police state. They may have laws, but few police to enforce anything or take minor crimes seriously. Basically, the world will be like Somalia.
Positive: There are many "miracle" technologies that make life amazing. Pretty any ailments, including genetic ones are cured, and the life expectancy has doubled. World peace has come, as all nations have unified into one. There is a thriving economy and starvation and poverty are gone for good. Nanotechnology can make food and eliminates rubbish (I'm not british), and we learn how to make beautiful underground cities to solve population problems. There are many nature preserves that people can visit to get away from the cities. Overpopulation may not even be a problem if we can somehow influence society so the average amount of kids is 2 (population neither shrinks or grows if the average birth rate is 2 children).
Please elaborate on both and tell me how you think life will be 100 years from now.
Pytanie #27:
Most of you love to stick your willy in nanotechnology, but what about critical thinking on life... does this not concern everyone, that we live in a 24 hour memory - what can you do for me right now - I'll hire the pretty one over the qualified one - making other's richer to get by is what makes you a man and built Ford tough mentality that runs society, which by the way could care less about their fellow man or woman, save kids, except in time of war, because money is the ultimate fortune brought to the same 1% that employ your dad, fired your cousin, sent you off to war, implemented taxes to pay the private national banks interest rates so that we could keep on spending on things we don't need to distract us from the important aspects of life that most of us have no clue about.
Pytanie #28:
Let's say you want to be an actor but you don't like the whole 'actors are braindead' stererotype, so you do two degrees, one in chemical engineering and the other in electronics engineering, and then you become an actor. This way with not one but two engineering degrees, NO ONE CAN CALL YOU BRAINDEAD!
Next, you invest some of your miliions into nanotechnology and work in the industry (not for a salary, more of an investor being somewhat involved to ensure his product succeeds) when you get that break between films. I think this sounds like a pretty fulfilling life and it's the goal of someone I know. Do you think this is a good idea or not?
At BKM:
This person is on a full ride scholarship to Stanford so she'll be graduating without college debt and the millions will come when she's an established actor (she calls herself and actor and not an actress); and don't worry, she says she doesn't want kids and thinks that men should just be used for sex (she's a dominatrix who calls herself Majestrix Maeve) and says she never wants to be in a steady relationship until she's 30. And to anyone who doesnt have one freaky friend, get out and mingle because they aren't that uncommon. Trust me, you'll meet them, and she's one of the coolest people I know!
@BKM again:
I was going to choose your answer as best answer so I could relay what you said as criticism, which when taken constructively, is fantastic; but then you said the whole 'repent and accept Jesus' and I just got turned off. I'll still tell her some of what you said though, but no best answer for you!

I am a senior at High School now and for some reason I am usually considered a freak and other colorful insults. (Usually of the female populous the guys just leave me alone) It even gets to the point where I skipped my junior and I probably will skip my senior prom… I just don’t want to go to a place where I’m obviously are not wanted.
Maybe someone can answer me if I type a little bit about myself...( [] = random facts about me)
[I tried building my own particle collider when I was young, ended up blowing all the fuses and a visit from a very angry electric man.]
I have brown, almost black, hair with bright brown eyes and an average build (But I am about 6 ft 2 in tall.). I’m very shy (I usually stick by myself) to people I don’t trust but, once I trust you I’m pretty out going and I will literally take a bullet for them. What's more is I am very kind and very logical, but I do struggle with Bipolar disorder. I am Christian, but I have the firm belief that each person on the planet has a path that only they can walk, others should not impede on it (I was actually kicked out of a church for that belief). I also have my own philosophy that I follow.
[I guess I could be considered arrogant, but isn't that just the reality for all of humanity?]
I’m also the brightest and most ambitious student at my school, with passion for science. I dream of going to college so I could work on field of Nanotechnology, and to build my own real iron man power armor…. (What?)
[I have a pretty dry sense of humor]
I enjoy lifting weights, meditation, philosophy, continuing my eternal quest of mastering the German language, and taking apart machines to see how they work. I like listening to music, hanging out with the few friends I trust, my family, and teaching my nieces and nephews
I despise my father, people who force their views on others, animal cruelty, morons, and Tom Cruise (He knows what he did)
It rather confuses me why I’m so disliked… Could it be instinct? Where they sense someone superior and the collective of ignorance feels frighten and is trying to smite it out of existence? Humanity has always acted as such. Or could it be that I am being used as a scapegoat for the their own problems? Could it be because in reality I’m a horrible person? Or could it be a more simple answer that I'm just complicating?
If someone could be so kind as to tell me what’s wrong with me so I could amend it, I would really appreciate it…

Sorry this is in the marriage section but in my defense the singles and dating sucks because they are all about manipulation and control to solve relationship issues.
Long story short: my school and living situation coupled with the fact that I have A LOT of girls showing interest in me (don't worry I'm nice back but not flirty) has basically caused a breakup. I'd only be living 20 minutes away from her but I also will living in a house of ten people (5 are girls). Tis girl has major trust issues because she always gets screwed in relationships.
She broke it off with me and I was obviously pretty upset. She tried to be friendly with me and I was pretty hurt and said I needed space. I accused her of already having moved on and she said no she hasn't. Thats good I suppose. We got in an argument and haven't spoken in 7 days. Her sister randomly texted me to say hi and we chatted a little.
My ex found out about us talking and was apperently mad about it. Why would she be upset? My 14 year old sister was upset and my ex said "if you need someone to talk, I'm here" but I didn't get upset ...
I just don't get how we could go from talking about things like what kind of dog we are going to get and marriage and stuff (very casually talking) to completely done.
At this point, I'm just going to walk away for now. I haven't done anything wrong in this situation. Is it possible that being single and with her friends will help her grow and overcome her trust issues. If I walk away from the situation, will she hate me or will she be understanding? I've already tried talking with her and it's pointless.
Will she regret this? I don't mean to brag but I pride myself in being a great guy to girls. I work full time and am going to college for nanotechnology, want to get a PhD. I'm going on tour with a band this summer. On friday nights I'd skip out on parties and go spend time with her and her family.
Sorry for this rant ...

If you wanted to do a 5 year dual degree in chemical and electrical engineering, and then do a master's in electrical engineering with an emphasis on electronics engineering, followed by a master's in chemical engineering with emphasis on nanotechnology, is there some job that can combine these two fields into a high paying career?
NO, I'm not stupid! I know that it's better to just do one engineering degree, because engineering is such an interdisciplinary field that you can apply what you need to any industry. However, for the person who, here's a big shock, has a passion to learn and is going to college more for knowledge than just getting a good job, is there a high paying job that blends the two fields well?

This is a question about my friend who wants to pioneer research into developing a computer that's completely organic based. It is becoming, more and more, common-knowledge that humans might, someday, sooner than we thought, stop our biological clocks from ticking (in other words, we'd stop aging). Probably using little tweaks in our DNA and telomeres, and also using nanotechnology to repair any damage done to us, whether by diseases or accidents, or by time itself.
So, my question is..
Do people still think stopping aging (and who knows, possibly getting closer to immortality) is impossible, and pure fiction? I mean, people ages ago thought organ transplants were crazy and impossible, and look at us go!!
I think the human mind and/or information power is growing so quickly, that we will discover in 20/30 years more than we discovered in hundreds of years past...( I've heard something like this on the news, but I can't find it.. if someone heard something like that, or has a link to it, please let me know, cause I've got some skeptic friends.)

My friend wants to do a dual degree in chemical and electronics engineering. He says he's very analytical and for as long as he can remember, he always wanted to know what everything is made out of and had a magnifying glass examining stuff (he asked for an electron microscope when he was 12). He wants to go into nanotechnology, but he realizes that there are no jobs that require you to have two engineering degrees. He says that they'll just have chemical engineers and electronics engineers specializing in their respective fields and working together, versus having someone with both degrees. He still wants to do both, but his dad is paying for college and is an industrial engineer and told him two engineering degrees does not mean double the salary upon graduation, and that he's only paying for one degree. He says the only way he'll pay for two degrees is if he chooses an engineering degree and couples it with a business degree, not another engineering degree.
I feel sorry for my friend, because he's one of those rare individuals that actually truly loves what he does but realizes his dad has a valid point. Should he follow his dad's advice or just let his father pay for one degree, and take out a student loan to pay for the other?
